January- This month’s locally grown food features Brussel Sprouts. Brussels sprouts are in the same family as broccoli, cauliflower, collard greens and kale. They contain large amounts of vitamin A, vitamin C, folic acid and dietary fiber.

Brussel sprouts were first cultivated in Italy during Roman times, but later they were cultivated in large quantities in Belgium in the 1600’s and got their name from “Brussels”, Belgium.

Brussel sprouts were first introduced into California commercial agriculture around the 1900’s. Currently, the central coast of California has the largest acreage, but they are also grown locally in the Sacramento area. They are abundant at the farmers markets right now so try some!
